Speeding on Westford Street

Earlier today I met with Captain Desmarais of the Lowell Police Department, Neighborhood Response Unit as a follow up to last night's meeting of The Lowell Highlands Neighborhood Association. This was in regard to the ongoing Speeding concerns along Westford Street, and communications I've had with Elizabeth Oltman, Transportation Engineer with the City of Lowell over the summer.

We drove the length of Westford Street together in both directions, making note of existing speed limit signage, and identifying preferred locations for additional signage based on the official Map of Lowell Streets with Special Speed Regulations (i.e. those not set by default at 25mph). We mutually agreed that the current amount of signage is insufficient to inform the Public where the Speed Limit changes.

Please refer to the attached map I prepared to memorialize our conversation.

Westbound Travel...

  • (a) - Proposed Signage - 30mph near the intersection with Chelmsford Street (Route 110)

  • (b) - Proposed Signage - 25mph between School Street and Coral Street

  • (c) - Proposed Signage - 30mph between Stevens Street and Edson Street

  • (d) - Proposed Signage - 30mph between Sayles Street and Dartmouth Street (we recommended this location due to it's proximity to the Tyler Park Historic District)

  • (e) - Existing Signage - 30mph between Raynor Street and Baldwin Street

Eastbound Travel...

  • (f) - Proposed Signage - 30mph between Wood Street and Stedman Street

  • (g) - Existing Signage - 30mph between Stedman Street and Ostrander Avenue

  • (h) - Existing Signage - 30mph between Pine Street and Tyler Park

  • (i) - Proposed Signage - 25mph between Stevens Street and Academy Drive

  • (j) - Existing Signage - 25mph between Wilder Street and Hastings Street

  • (k) - Proposed Signage - 30mph between School Street and Lane Street.

Thank you Captain Desmarais for taking our Community's Speeding concerns seriously, and working with me today toward finding a solution to improve the enforcement of these speeding regulations.
